Elephant Circle is a legal service, organizing and capacity building organization rooted in an anti-oppression framework and working at the center of the birth justice movement. Our goal is to expand the capacity of people and organizations across the country to “circle around” in the way elephants circle around to support and protect those giving birth.
Members of the Elephant Circle team have been involved in access and equity issues for over twenty years and have extensive expertise in expanding the capacity of historically white organizations to become multiracial, anti-oppression oriented groups. Elephant Circle is one of the few consumer-based organizations in the country that has a strong focus on maternity care and on developing a multiracial birth justice base.

Metta Lineage has a few key projects, with many more coming as we build our capacity through our apprenticeship program and community building. We currently have an intensive apprenticeship program, wherein Gracie Koester of Birth Root Doula and Christy Hall of ChristytheDoula fold a few newer doulas into our private practices. Our program also provides support and advanced learning modules and experiences to assist our apprentices in building robust skill-sets, lifestyles and businesses.
In addition to our private practices, we currently carry a contract with CODA, a medication assisted Treatment Program in Portland, Oregon, wherein we provide full spectrum doula services to people who are in recovery from opiate addiction. Our apprentices participate in this work with us as well. We look forward to the possibility of building similar relationships with other various social service agencies as our capacity grows.
Our work is centered around the value of building justice and access for our clients, and also for the people who do doula work. Metta doulas are consistently working to build broader, innovative and more inclusive practices that influence the broader doula communities’ drive towards sustainability, access and justice.
Check out our website or get in touch to learn more about our work and stay updated as more of our projects get off the ground! We anticipate that we will be seeking new apprentices for the Fall of 2015. www.mettalineage.org
Family Tree Clinic
Located in Minneapolis, MN, Family Tree Clinic’s mission is to cultivate a healthy community through comprehensive sexual health care and education. We’ve been around for 40 years, and during those 40 odd years, we’ve never turned a patient away if they couldn’t pay. Why? Because we have a deep understanding of the importance of reproductive and sexual health services. Poverty, oppression, lack of access and discrimination are just a handful of the barriers the people we serve face when it comes to getting their health care needs met.
We are determined to change that.
We believe each individual person — every body — is deserving of not only high quality and affordable services, but also of affirming, individualized and respectful care. It’s what people should expect from their health care providers. And that’s exactly what we deliver.
